Peter Max
influenced American culture in the 1960s just as the Beatles revolutionized popular music. Taking part in the psychedelic movement, his graphic works became so popular that they were widely imitated in commercial design. Max's art was licensed by 72 corporations including General Electric and Continental Airlines and it wasn't long before he became a household name.

His passionate spirit makes him a multi-dimensional creative artist. His interests in art and astronomy were cultivated through a charmed childhood full of travel and adventure. "If I didn't choose art, I would have become an astronomer. I became fascinated with the vast distances in space as well as the vast world within the atom," says Max. His creativity and transcendental imagery captured the hearts of the entire generation and suddenly he was on magazine covers, national television and painting for the President of the United States of America.

In the 1970s, Peter Max's interest in human, environmental, and animal rights blossomed. In 1976, Max released his book "Peter Max Paints America" and began an annual July 4th tradition of painting the Statue of Liberty and even contributed to the statue's restoration. In 1989, for the 20th anniversary of Woodstock, Max created the world's largest rock-and-roll stage for the Moscow Music Peace Festival. Soon after, communism fell in Eastern Europe and he was selected to receive a 7,000-pound section of the Berlin Wall. Using a hammer and chisel, he carved a dove from within the stone and placed it on top of the wall to set it free.  In 2002, he donated thousands of dollars worth of his art to benefit the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Always willing to use his artistic creativity for the greater good, Peter Max is ready to take on the challenges of the new millennium.

The Peter Max collection at Baterbys includes the Statue of Liberty suite, Obama suite, and Baterbys' exclusive Masters suite consisting of portraits of famous artists including Albrecht Durer, Leonardo da Vinci, and Pablo Picasso. His bright, graphic compositions exemplify the style of the '60s but remain timeless additions to the Baterbys collection.
