Painting is and must be an expression of life. It certainly is not art for art’s sake, a means of escaping. Rather, it is a deeper plunge into life that can be achieved in any other way…it hovers between reality & abstraction and teeters on the pinpoint of chaos.” – Alfred Morang

Art is timeless only as much as it flows through the influences of succeeding generations. It is not contained in the medium alone nor circumscribed by the physical environment in which it was created.  Art is what it is as we experience it

– the immersive moment in which an artistic medium touches our existence and alters its meaning.

This is art. This is life.

Alfred Morang believed that his medium of painting is only a reflection of life itself, “a springboard to imagination” as he would say. He lived his art and was able to pass on this ethos to some young artists who eagerly sought his mentorship.

William Vincent is one of these young painters to be taken in tutelage by Alfred Morang. Right before the master painter’s untimely and tragic death, William Vincent started his studies at the Taos School of Art. This is where Alfred Morang’s direct influence started to enlighten and imbue Vincent’s work. After Alfred Morang’s death in 1962, he acquired the artist’s entire estate from Carrie Morang Robinson.

In early 2004, William Vincent passed away. His entire estate and collection was kept by the family from the public until recently. From March 27 to April 10, Baterbys Art Auction Gallery in Orlando will exhibit these vibrant pieces. In addition, some of Alfred Morang’s works which were part of Vincent’s private collection will be included.

“Sinatra can sing. Astaire could dance. Vincent can paint

…It may not be right to love things, material things, things of the earth.

Those with strong religious convictions may chastise those of us who cling too tightly to things.

Yet these paintings by William Vincent are not trifles.

They say something about our lives and our times, even though much of it is timeless”

“The Life and Art of William Vincent”

The influence of Alfred Morang in William Vincent’s work is ostensible – the intricacy of the impressions, the vibrancy of the palette and the enduring affinity for landscapes amongst other common subjects of interest.
