“Descent from the cross by torchlight”, Rembrandt

One of Rembrandt’s most sought after etchings, “Descent from the cross by torchlight”, will be up for auction on Saturday, August 27 at Baterbys. The artwork is infused with Rembrandt’s characteristic style of illuminating certain aspects of a work of art to emphasize his emotional intensity. It is understood that the piece is from the Jean Recueil edition issued in 1810 – an early 19th century impression before the reworking of the plates by Beaumont and Bernard. Several images of the same quality and condition by Rembrandt are priced between $70–$80,000. Yet, according to a representative of Baterbys, the consignor of this item is simply keen on selling it. Given the condition of the market, let’s see how much this one goes for at the auction on Saturday!

Rembrandt was one of the greatest artists in history and arguably the most important in Dutch history. His Baroque-era works include beautifully rendered portraits and religious scenes, often playing on the balance of light and shadow to bring depth and feeling to each piece. His artworks are in major museums such as the Louvre, Hermitage Museum and National Gallery.

Several artworks by Charles Fazzino and Don “Ducky” Williams have been also added to Baterbys’ roster slated for Saturday, August 27. These artworks will start at very low reserves because many of Baterbys’ consignors want to liquidate their art collections. Fazzino’s “Money Makes the World Go Round” is a stunningly colorful, elaborate and much coveted artwork that is valued at almost three times its opening price!

For more than twenty-five years, Charles Fazzino’s name has been synonymous with bright, whimsical, and wonderfully detailed three-dimensional pop art. He is best known for the frenetic energy that infuses his work and a unique, hand-assembled 3-D layering technique that brings his images to life. Fazzino’s 3D pop artwork can be found in the private collections of Rosie O’Donnell, Michael Eisner, Hillary Clinton, Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Roger Clemens, Michael Jordan, Julia Roberts and many other internationally renowned figures and corporations.

Another artist whose work will be featured on Saturday at Baterbys is Disney’s brilliant and comical animator, Don “Ducky” Williams. Renowned for his illustrations of Disney’s most beloved characters, Don Williams has made a name for himself at The Walt Disney Company for over 30 years as an illustrator of books, lithographs, magazine ads and commercials. Inside the walls of Disney, he’s held the reputation of being one of the best illustrators of Donald Duck and hence, was given the nickname, “Ducky”.

An entire suite of his drawings featuring all-time favorite characters such Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Aladdin, Ariel, Snow White and Winnie the Pooh amongst dozens of others, have also been recently added to the list of items that will be auctioned off.
