    About the Art

Marc Chagall was a pioneer for Jewish artists, he had a distinct style of painting dream like scenes of personal history and European folklore. He was a painter, printmaker, book illustrator, and he even made stained glass windows. He began experimenting with Cubism in 1910 when he moved to Paris and his style is considered a mixture of Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism. His supernatural subjects are also thought to have significantly influenced surrealism.

Depicted in this piece is Persian King Assuerus hunting Queen Vasthi. In the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) Queen Vasthi was banished for her refusal to appear at the king’s banquet to show her beauty as the king wished. Vasthi is surrounded by darkness alluding to her wicked and vain ways. The brightness of the center creates a nice contrast with the darkness. Chagall’s use of thick black outlines over the entire piece makes the piece beautifully balanced.
