This is an original lithograph based on part of a gouache cut-out. In the late 1940s, Matisse worked almost exclusively with cut out paper to create inventive small and large scale works. This piece was inspired by Matisse’s trip to his favorite pool in Cannes. The monumental cut-out which hung on his wall until his death features animated silhouettes of swimmers, divers, and stars.
Henri Matisse is well-regarded as the master of color of the 20th century. He was a versatile artist who created paintings, sculptures, and works on paper.
