Verve, was a popular 20th century modernist Parisian art magazine published by Teriafe. The magazine had 38 issues in 10 volumes and included lithographs by the early 20th century artists of the Parisian scene. It reviewed the artist including letters and literature, and featured texts by artists and writers. The magazine played a large role in educating the public about the artists of the day.
Fifty years ago in Paris, the magazine to look for was Verve, which first came out in December 1937 and kept going in one form or another till 1960. That first cover (by Henri Matisse) sang out from the other side of the street in a way that made us run across the road to look at it more closely. And when we turned its pages, Verve had a bosomy, full-fleshed, slightly slithery quality that this former subscriber would know in his sleep. Writing in 1988, John Russell of the New York Times
The influence of Verve was significant; it was a magazine that featured art for art’s sake, and included works by significant artists of the day which included: Earnest Hemingway, Marc Chagall, James Joyce, Man Ray, Jean –Paul Sartre, Pierre Bonnard, and many more.
One of the featured artists was, Henri Matisse. Today, Matisse is considered one of the most revolutionary and influential artists of the 20th century. His career as artist was divided into several periods all in which changed stylistically and became highly influential. One of his last artistic experiments was his paper cut-outs.
One of Matisse’s first paper cut-out is featured on the cover of the first Verve edition. The image is of a nude drawn in ink and includes paper cut-outs around the drawing. Additionally, Matisse’s lithographs would be used in the third and fourth issues, and other covers.
